The Trails Foundation of Northern Utah (TFNU) partners with the U.S. Forest Service to help coordinate and support the Adopt-A-Trail Program on designated National Forest trails throughout Northern Utah.
Trail adopters play a vital role in helping maintain and monitor trails by providing volunteer stewardship, reporting trail conditions, and serving as ambassadors for responsible trail use.

Click the Contact Us button below to let us know you're interested in becoming a trail adopter. TFNU will provide information on currently available trails and help match you with a trail that fits your interests, location, and desired commitment level.
Program Expectations
Trail adopters agree to:
- Complete a Volunteer Service Agreement (October 1 – September 30)
- Review and follow applicable U.S. Forest Service and Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) requirements
- Coordinate with TFNU before conducting volunteer events
- Attend the annual spring kick-off meeting
- Submit trail reports at least three times per year, including:
- Volunteer hours
- Work completed
- Photos of trail conditions and projects
- Trail issues, maintenance needs, and safety concerns
- Help monitor and assess overall trail conditions
Recognition
Trail adopters who maintain their adopted trail for three consecutive years will receive recognition on a trailhead plaque. Recognition may include an individual, family, organization, business name, or logo (subject to approval and Forest Service guidelines).
Together, TFNU, the U.S. Forest Service, and our volunteers help ensure Northern Utah's trails remain safe, sustainable, and enjoyable for everyone.
