Recently, Senator Mike Lee of Utah made a proposal to mandate the sale of up to 3.3 million acres of federal public land across 11 western states. Fortunately, this was blocked by the Senate Parliamentarian, who ruled it violated budgetary rules. In response to widespread backlash, Lee announced changes to the bill, including the removal of Forest Service lands, and limiting eligible BLM parcels that fell into specific ‘zones.’
Despite the revision, it appears that the intent remains - to sell off public lands under the guise of addressing housing needs, without clear protections for recreation, or conservation considerations. Public land advocates warn that future versions of the bill will continue being pushed forward.
At TFNU we oppose any and all efforts by the Federal Government to sell off US Forest Service and BLM lands in Northern Utah.
TFNU stands firmly against any proposal that would allow the sale of National Forest of BLM land in Northern Utah. These public lands are home to the trails we all rely on for recreating and connecting with nature. Selling them off threatens not just access, but the health, economy, and quality of life of our entire region.
At TFNU, we do far more than move dirt. We maintain and build trails, but we also show up in the rooms where decisions like these are discussed (at length) and are made. We advocate for public access, land conservation, and the long-term sustainability of our trail systems.
When you become a member of TFNU, you’re not just supporting local trail work - you’re personally helping ensure that Northern Utah’s trails and public land will have a voice when it matters most. Join us in protecting what makes our community of outdoor enthusiasts so
special.
